Since the early 1960s, new generations of singer-songwriters have created innumerable works on countless subjects. These poet-musicians have told stories and painted pictures, sometimes in lyrics of exquisite beauty, in message songs and love songs, funny songs and (sometimes) angry songs, private songs and very public songs. They are songs for listening — songs to pay attention to. Music Historian Robert Cohen will discuss these contemporary singer-songwriters who have changed the American songbook, and will play recordings of a generous helping of their songs.
